In theory it should be easy enough to take your RV to a campground; just get in and drive it there, right? But wait; there are some things you should do first. The very first thing to do before you even start off is book in. It will be frustrating to arrive after a hard day’s drive only to find the place is booked out. And if you are lucky enough to find a Park with spare sites you can’t be sure there will be one to fit your size RV, especially if it is one of the larger sizes.

If you can get a map of the campground, so much the better. You’ll be able to choose a site away from dump stations, dumpsters and high-traffic areas. Your ideal site will have plenty of room for awnings and slide-outs, shade if it is hot weather and open space if it’s not. It will be level, with no need to share any hook-ups, no general footpaths going right past the door and good satellite reception. If you book a site with the aid of a map, you’ll be able to wend your way to it through all the other sites without any trouble.

So you’ve booked and packed; but don’t forget to estimate your time of arrival. Traveling in an RV may be slower than a family car. You don’t want to arrive at 3 am and disturb all the neighbors as you try to back into your site. Besides, it’s easier to park in the daylight. So allow yourself plenty of time to have rest stops and still get there in daylight.

When you arrive and get parked, the very first thing you need to do is get hooked up. Power is the first requirement. Open the breaker box on the post and turn off the breaker. Insert the polarity tester to verify that the power is working. Turn if off again, remove the tester, and making sure that all your appliances are switched off, unwind your RV power cord and plug it in at the post. Then you can turn the breaker back on, close the electrical box and make sure there is power inside the RV.

Water is the next necessity, so attach the pressure regulator to the faucet, attach the inline filter to the regulator and attach one end of the hose to the inline filter and the other end to the RV connection. Turn on the water and check all faucets and showerhead in the RV for running water. Voila! You are all set up for your holiday - and hopefully the rest of the family have set up the awning and started the evening meal.
