National Parks are one of the most popular places for RVers to spend their spare days or weeks. They can get close to nature without putting themselves in too much danger. There are still basic facilities at many Parks and more importantly, there is help close at hand if things go wrong. Going to a National Park still means that you will be roughing it more than if you went to a RV Resort.

Some National Parks have no facilities at all, but what you have in your RV should see you through for several days. In some places RVs over a certain length are not allowed, so make sure you find out beforehand if yours is the right length. The roads and trails in some Parks are extremely rough and not navigable for larger RVs or those without 4WD. Find out before you start off exploring whether your RV can safely negotiate the trail.

An uphill, one-way dirt track, Old Fall River Road in the Rocky Mountain National Park is closed to trailers and any RV over 25 ft long. This is a safety rule that you would be well advised to follow. Parking is generally limited in the Park, so if you plan to go there and want to see the sights, it may be wise to start out rather earlier than the general horde. That way you get the pick of the spots before the others arrive.

If your RV is a motorized home, you’ll have to leave your site to go exploring, so what if you get back and find some other lucky camper has taken it? Avoid this disaster by taking something like an old cardboard carton with "Site Taken" painted on it. Weigh it down with something heavy so it doesn’t blow away. This should deter all but the cheekiest visitor.

Find out from the staff if your food needs any special protection from bears. Some parks have special bear-proof boxes available for all food to be stored in. Bears have been known to break into the trunks of vehicles to get at food.

A level campsite might be hard to find at a National Park. To avoid sleeping on a slope and having your food slip off the table while you are trying to eat it, take along four of five leveling blocks and a bubble level. Place the planks in the low spots and drive up on them. Your refrigerator will work better if its level, too. With these few tips kept in mind, your trip to a National Park should be voted a great success.
