Once you get your RV you may need a bit of practice in driving it, especially if it is bigger and longer than you are used to. It takes quite a bit of concentration to drive a larger vehicle and since the driver alone is considered responsible for the safety of both vehicle and passengers, he must not be distracted or hassled by either passengers or navigator.

Safety begins before you even start off. It’s wise to walk all around the vehicle to check that all the doors have been properly closed and all the gear safely stowed in its proper place. Inside should be checked too, to ensure that foodstuffs and breakables have been stored properly so they won’t fall and break. The refrigerator and cabinet doors should be securely shut and faucets turned off tightly. Inspect the tires and look for any oil, water or sewage leaks.

If you are leaving a campground look all around your exit route to make sure there are no overhanging branches or signs that could be too low for your vehicle. Make certain that there are no children dangerously close or cars parked nearby.

Once you are out on the road you’ll need to change lanes, so be sure to do so in a timely manner, keeping to the same speed as the rest of the traffic. Slowing down is dangerous. Remember that your RV is much longer than your normal family car, so corners must be taken wider. Allow also for the back overhang. It will be swinging in the opposite direction when you turn.

Leave plenty of room between your RV and the vehicle in front. It takes longer for a larger vehicle to stop, so you must allow for that. When semis pass you in either direction, be prepared for the wind-shock that will rock your vehicle. It’s not usually necessary to correct your steering, just hold it steady and straight.

Never swerve to miss an animal on the road. A swerving RV is an out-of-control one and it’s almost impossible to correct the swerve. Better for the animal to die than you or your passengers.

When you park, make sure there is enough room for the entire vehicle, otherwise there’ll be some left sticking out into the traffic; a recipe for disaster. Remember that long tail end and be sure there is enough room for it to miss things like mailboxes and power poles.

When backing, don’t be hassled by rude and impatient drivers waiting for you. If you are not sure it’s completely safe to move, get out and take a look. If you need assistance, ask someone you trust and get them to use hand signals rather than verbal cues, which may not be heard.
